SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN.
"American Origins: (As sent to me by Brian Dodd)
Quote from ENCARTA 95
The American version of the Santa Claus figure received its inspiration and its name from the Dutch legend of Sinter Klaas, brought by settlers to New York in the 17th century.
As early as 1773 the name appeared in the American press as "St. A Claus," but it was the popular author Washington Irving who gave Americans their first detailed information about the Dutch version of Saint Nicholas. In his History of New York, published in 1809 under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker, Irving described the arrival of the saint on horseback (unaccompanied by Black Peter) each Eve of Saint Nicholas.
This Dutch-American Saint Nick achieved his fully Americanized form in 1823 in the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas more commonly known as The Night Before Christmas by writer Clement Clarke Moore. Moore included such details as the names of the reindeer; Santa Claus's laughs, winks, and nods; and the method by which Saint Nicholas, referred to as an elf, returns up the chimney. (Moore's phrase "lays his finger aside of his nose" was drawn directly from Irving's 1809 description.)
The American image of Santa Claus was further elaborated by illustrator Thomas Nast, who depicted a rotund Santa for Christmas issues of Harper's magazine from the 1860s to the 1880s. Nast added such details as Santa's workshop at the North Pole and Santa's list of the good and bad children of the world. A human-sized version of Santa Claus, rather than the elf of Moore's poem, was depicted in a series of illustrations for Coca-Cola advertisements introduced in 1931. In modern versions of the Santa Claus legend, only his toy-shop workers are elves. Rudolph, the ninth reindeer, with a red and shiny nose, was invented in 1939 by an advertising writer for the Montgomery Ward Company.
In looking for the historical roots of Santa Claus, one must go very deep in the past. One discovers that Santa Claus as we know him is a combination of many different legends and mythical creatures.
The basis for the Christian-era Santa Claus is Bishop Nicholas of Smyrna (Izmir), in what is now Turkey. Nicholas lived in the 4th century A.D. He was very rich, generous, and loving toward children. Often he gave joy to poor children by throwing gifts in through their windows.
The Orthodox Church later raised St. Nicholas, miracle worker, to a position of great esteem. It was in his honor that Russia's oldest church, for example, was built. For its part, the Roman Catholic Church honored Nicholas as one who helped children and the poor. St. Nicholas became the patron saint of children and seafarers. His name day is December 6th.
In the Protestant areas of central and northern Germany, St. Nicholas later became known as der Weinachtsmann. In England he came to be called Father Christmas. St. Nicholas made his way to the United States with Dutch immigrants, and began to be referred to as Santa Claus.
In North American poetry and illustrations, Santa Claus, in his white beard, red jacket and pompom-topped cap, would sally forth on the night before Christmas in his sleigh, pulled by eight reindeer, and climb down chimneys to leave his gifts in stockings children set out on the fireplace's mantelpiece.
Children naturally wanted to know where Santa Claus actually came from. Where did he live when he wasn't delivering presents? Those questions gave rise to the legend that Santa Claus lived at the North Pole, where his Christmas-gift workshop was also located.
In 1925, since grazing reindeer would not be possible at the North Pole, newspapers revealed that Santa Claus in fact lived in Finnish Lapland. "Uncle Markus", Markus Rautio, who compared the popular "Children's hour" on Finnish public radio, revealed the great secret for the first time in 1927: Santa Claus lives on Lapland's Korvatunturi - "Ear Fell"
The fell, which is situated directly on Finland's eastern frontier, somewhat resembles a hare's ears - which are in fact Santa Claus's ears, with which he listens to hear if the world's children are being nice. Santa has the assistance of a busy group of elves, who have quite their own history in Scandinanvian legend.
Over the centuries, customs from different parts of the Northern Hemisphere thus came together and created the whole world's Santa Claus - the ageless, timeless, deathless white-bearded man who gives out gifts on Christmas and always returns to Korvatunturi in Finnish Lapland.
Since the 1950s, Santa has happily sojourned at Napapiiri, near Rovaniemi, at times other than Christmas, to meet children and the young at heart. By 1985 his visits to Napapiiri had become so regular that he established his own Santa Claus Office there. He comes there every day of the year to hear what children want for Christmas and to talk with children who have arrived from around the world. Santa Claus Village is also the location of Santa's main Post Office, which receives children's letters from the four corners of the world.
Enjoy your day and

Dizzy Gillespie was many things--a great bop trumpeter, superbly
prescient vocalist, awesome bandleader, international ambassador,
crowd-pleasing humorist, the ultimate master of ceremonies--all
sides of his massive talent amply displayed in this cornucopia of
Gillespie big bands. The set collects three individual albums
from 1956-57--"Birks Works," "Dizzy In Greece" and "World
Statesman"--some alternate takes, and a fascinating sequence of
attempts at "Left Hand Corner" that shows the band's dedication
to perfection. Some of the great players on these sessions
include Phil Woods and Ernie Henry on alto saxophones, Lee Morgan
and Quincy Jones on trumpets, Al Grey on trombone, Walter Davis
Jr., and Wynton Kelly on piano with Charli Persip on drums. And,
of course, since it's Dizzy's band, everybody sings. --John

Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson were both consummate performers,
comfortable at any tempo, when they met for this 1957 recording,
and they're clearly enjoying one another's skills on ballads and
uptempo tunes alike. The group is one of the finest editions of
Peterson's trios, with bassist Ray Brown

of a drummer lets Getz's silky sound come to the fore with all
its details intact. For all his fame as a virtuosic pianist,
Peterson is an underrated accompanist. He complements a soloist
with deft fills and unobtrusive propulsion, and the backgrounds
he supplies here are as subtle as his solos are extroverted. The
program is a good mix of standards and Getz originals, including
the joyous "Tour's End," while the extended ballad medley could
define jazz lyricism. There's also a brief but infectious version
of Ellis's "Detour Ahead," the guitarist's early and highly
successful foray into songwriting. --Stuart Broomer

RECORDED New York,1956-1957 Helen Merrill's vocal tone was always
warm and husky. She developed from an apprehensive, untried
singer, wanting to be accepted, into a calm and competent
performer who could use her voice as an instrument of mood. Dream
of You (#1-12) was one of her best albums and an arranging
triumph for Gil Evans, who did all the scoring and conducting.
Evans, an extraordinarily sensitive and supple colorist, wrote
with particular care for the contours (linear and emotional) of
each song, as well as a measured understanding of Helen's texture
and phrasing. The second album included here, At Midnight
(#13-22), was recorded six months after the first one, and was
another smash hit for Helen. This time the backgrounds were
tailored to her own approach by Harold "Hal" Mooney. For this
collection, she harvested some of the better bits of romantic
poetry that existed in wisps among the voluminous Tin Pan Alley
melodies.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk
With its cinematic origins The Odd Couple is the natural title
for the second album by a pair who seem to spend as much time in
wardrobe as the studio and whose recordings are often compared to
film scores. Their greatest hit, 2006's "Crazy" was even built
around a chunk of a spaghetti western soundtrack. Yet after the
success of 2006's excellent St Elsewhere, the collaboration of
singer Thomas "Cee-Lo Green" Callaway and producer Brian "Danger
Mouse" Burton has become a permanent institution. The Odd Couple
certainly lives up to expectations, and though there is no
obvious smash to match "Crazy", it's a smoother affair than their
often hyperactive debut, the unsettling "Open Book" aside.
Highlights include the excellent, agitated lead-off single "Run",
a smart slice of off kilter pop-soul, and its most obvious
successor, the instant classic "Surprise". "Going On" manages to
weld an eighties pomp-pop introduction to a surprisingly
vulnerable Cee-Lo performance while the plaintive, bluesy "Who's
Gonna Save My Soul" catches him at his most soulful. "Whatever"
is a cute, rather bratty sixties pastiche halfway to Britpop
(though no Englishman ever used the expression "y'all") while the
warped bubblegum pop of "Blind Mary" and the more traditionally
ominous "Would Be Killer" are opposite sides of the same twisted
coin. Informed by rap and dance, but occupying their own unique
genre, Gnarls Barkley continue to soundtrack the movie that, so
far, exists only in their heads. --Steve Jelbert
Product Description
Following the worldwide, unparalleled critical acclaim for 2006's
St. Elsewhere and their record breaking hit "Crazy," Gnarls
Barkley is set to release their sophomore album this April.
Titled, The Odd Couple, the album features 13 tracks of new
material from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo Green. The first single,
"Run" has been met with rave reviews, and The Odd Couple is
without question one of the most anticipated releases of 2008.

Reeves 5:09 Review by Michael G. Nastos: Dianne Reeves has
deservedly been hoisted on high as one of the top five jazz
voices in the decade of the 2000s. Her four Grammy Awards and her
music from the movie soundtrack Good Night, and Good Luck
solidified Reeves' upper-echelon placement. When You Know
showcases material going off into the shallow end of the pool,
away from legitimate jazz, and covering languid and lush pop
songs. George Duke, who has over-produced many a recording in his
time, is not quite in the realm of Tommy LiPuma or Creed Taylor,
but he has done more than his share to give Reeves an
orchestrated backdrop to sing songs she likes. While it's good
that the setting is acoustic, thanks to a string quartet and the
guitar of Romero Lubambo, it seems the vocalist could do these
tunes just as well without them. Then again, Reeves, who displays
a picture-perfect instrument, has more often than not straddled
the commercial line, and has freely crossed over it. This should
not be much of a surprise to anyone. Her most impressive straight
jazz cover, "Social Call" sports a second-chorus extrapolated
lyric over the Wes Montgomery-styled electric guitar of Russell
Malone. There's nothing phony or pretentious about this one.
"Windmills of Your Mind" has an interesting modal arrangement
within a waltz framework. "Once I Loved" is done nicely, but as
in the case of the remainder of the other selections, lacks
energy and originality. A light funk version of "Midnight Sun"
does not compare favorably to Sarah Vaughan's classic version,
and Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You" should be left alone except
for those who wish to sleep and snooze to it. Lubambo is the
shining light of the session, heard on nine tracks in his own
inimitable, passionate, classy manner. Most indulgent is "Today
Will Be a Good Day," a rock shuffle with Malone's bluesy R&B
guitar resembling something the Stray Cats might have done in the
'80s. A disappointing project, it's a lazy, trite repeat of
worn-out material as opposed to Reeves creating pathways for new
ways of expression or reinventing great standards. -- Danilo
